Del Corazón festival pictures and update!

Saturday night was tremendous! We had a great celebration for the National Museum of Mexican Art's Del Corazón festival featuring Yo Soy Underground Supper! We truly represented! We had the idea to go with the theme of "desde el corzaón" or "from the heart" as our platform for the food and drink menu. We presented the following menu:

passed cocktail:

"bee still mi corazón"

a fabulous concotion of honey (hence the "bee" in the title) and camarena silver tequila with mezcal vida and fresh squeezed blood orange and lime juice! we had a garnish of fresh sugar cane was used as a stirring mechanism! awwwh, such sweethearts!

food menu:

1). cabbage and mushroom juan-tons with a papaya chile dipping sauce

we both are self proclaimed momma's boys, and the presentation of the juan-ton's (or wontons) replicate that of a purse. we wanted something that would pay homage to our mom's and also be able to be a common denominator between both of them. I remember always digging through my mom's purse for things and the staunch smell of wrigley gum peppermint being blasted almost throughout the room with each opening. It also seemed that whatever you needed while away from home, mom had it all in her purse! this was our little nod to our mom's letting them know we love them, and yep, we are still momma's boys!

2). carrot-star anise soup with crema fresca and corn tortilla strips tossed in chinese 5 spice

this soup is the soup of all soups to us! brian and i started dating 7 years back, and he truly did work his way into my heart through my belly! this soup was one of the first meals brian ever prepared for me as part of a 3 course meal, and a dish that made me realize his cooking is beyond the typical recipe, there is love as an ingredient. every time I have this soup it reminds me of the day he made this amazing meal for me 7 years ago, and it warms my heart still to this day.

3). cajeta chicken cooked in chinese claypot withfresh ginger and jalapenos and soy sauce

for brian's 30th birthday we took a weekend trip to san francisco and we ate and drank our way through that town like there was no tomorrow! it was special to us because it was brian's 30th birthday celebration, and it just made us realize that our passion for food and wine is one that we share together. the more we thought about it, the more we realized how fortunate we are to both be into what we do, and both be able to truly enjoy it together. We had plenty of amazing food while there, but there was one dish that stood out, and it was a caramel chicken dish. it was delicious! after we came home to chicago, we did a yo soy based upon our recent travel to san fran. and we created our own caramel chicken dish, made with mexican goat milk caramel, fresh jalapenos, ginger, all slowly stewed in a chinese claypot and then paired it with my now infamous mexican rice! when we served it to our guests during that dinner, it was not soon after everyones first bite that they began sharing their love for what they were tasting! it was one of the first times that i got the immediate satisfaction from our diners that really solidified the belief in what we do.  it HAD to be part of the "from the heart dinner", it materializes those exact words.

4). blood orange flan with candied orange zest and puffed wild rice

alright, so we went a little literal with this one! blood orange and "from the heart" get it!? lol! we had to do it. it was a fantastic dessert to end a fantastic meal, and blood oranges are in season, so it was a no-brainer for us!

NOTE: PLEASE CHECK OUT ALL OF THE PHOTOS IN THE PHOTOS SECTION!the NMMA photographer was Magali Rangel! she did an amazing job, and i credit all of the photographs from that event in her direction! gracias, magali!

to accentuate the night we had three sets of performers for yo soy! during cocktail hour we had the amazing Luna Blues Machine! betweeen the soup course we had Monica Del Castillo and for the wrap up performance we had cee-cee Larouge perform her perfect take on selena favorites! being that i am from Corpus Christi, Texas, I loved every single minute of it! she even wore a selena outfit! you know the one, you 'member, the purple jump suit! it was fantastico! huge props to all of them! they did a most wonderful and tremendous job! if you are ever looking for great tunes, seriuosly look these people up, any of them, or even all of them if you want an extravaganza!
